Glyncollen Primary School is situated in the Parc Gwernfadog Estate of Morriston. The school is very fortunate and is sited within extensive and beautiful grounds, all of which enhance the learning environment.
The grounds include a woodland, a pond, a playing field and a tarmacadamed yard equipped with a variety of games.

We are also fortunate to have a vegetable garden with a green house and allotments for growing food which the children use to cook and eat, a sensory garden and an adventure play area.

The school building is a modern single storey building built in 1978. As the building is relatively new it is in good condition. A central hall accommodates PE, Dance, Gym and is also used as a dining hall. Each class has its own teaching area. The school has single age classes throughout, with one class per year group.

The curriculum is centred around the children and we firmly believe that children learn best by direct experience. As a result, we aim to offer children exciting learning opportunities, through using the immediate environment of the school and also the wider environment
around them.
We access the wider environment through trips and visits, we also invite visitors to school who are able to extend the children’s learning experiences.

Children in Year 5 and 6 participate in residential visits to further extend their learning.
One of our core beliefs is that children learn best when they feel safe, happy and secure, so we focus a great deal of attention on the children’s well being. To maximise this we place Personal, Social and Emotional Education (PSE) at the heart of our work and also undertake a good deal of work with the children to develop Emotional Intelligence.
We believe that children from a very young age have great autonomy and through the correct learning environment can develop independent and motivated dispositions to learning. This lies at the heart of our class and school curriculum organisation.

Thinking is central to developing independent learners and we actively encourage deep and profound thinking within the children, to extend and challenge them. We do this through the use of our PSE curriculum and through engaging the children in :
-
Philosophy for Children (P4C),
-
Cognitive Acceleration through Maths Education (CAME),
-
Cognitive Acceleration through Science Education (CASE),
-
Let’s Think Maths and Let’s Think Science.
All strategies are proven to raise attainment and to include ALL learners at their relevant ability.
The broad curriculum is the platform on which we ensure ALL children are able to be stimulated, motivated and to celebrate their talents. This is crucial to the development and maintenance of self esteem, self belief and motivation, which are vital to achievement and developing a drive to succeed. As part of this we invite specialists and coaches into school to enrich the learning by delivering activities related to Modern Foreign languages, Sport, and creative activities such as Art and Dance. We also are involved in a Comenius - Global Citizenship project with four European schools which is further enriching our children's awareness of Global Environmental Issues.
At the heart of our ethos is the belief that mutual respect between everybody is crucial to the harmony of the school. Listening to learners is vital to our school development. The School Council, Glyncollen Guardians (peer mediators), the Safety Squad and the Excellent Ecos are very active in assisting us in the development of the school, taking care of our immediate and wider environment.
Staff development is central to having a well trained staff to deliver the very best curriculum.
The school heavily invests in the continuing development of all members of the whole team. We believe that the school is learning community for everyone within; children and adults alike. This allows the children to see adults as role models, who are also involved in learning as a lifelong process.
The school has been fortunate to have been invited to participate in a wide number of initiatives at local and national levels, as well as pursuing initiatives instigated by the school in pursuit of improvement.
We are fortunate to receive tremendous support from our parents and carers. The home / school partnership is crucial to the learning process. We value and appreciate the support we receive, which enables us to offer the children activities which extend and enrich their learning and the environment we can provide.
As part of the partnership the school and home work together in the Parent Teacher, Friends Association (PTFA) which is run by parents, with school staff input. The PTFA work tirelessly to raise funds which benefit the children by subsiding trips and purchasing resources and equipment for the children to use.
In Glyncollen Primary School we know that our partnerships with parents / carers and the community enable us to provide and achieve the best we can for the children. The children are the most important aspect of the school and we feel proud to have such a caring and hard working community where success is striven for.
Best Wishes,
