Welcome to Our Year 2 Class Page
Keep checking this page as we will update it regularly with photo's and more information on our class.
This term we have been exploring the topic of sound within our theme 'What's that noise?'
We have carried out a range of activities linked to sound. We studied the poem 'The Sound Collector' by Roger Mc Gough. We became sound collectors and collected sounds from all around the school. We were amazed how many sounds we were able to find.
We enjoyed finding sounds in the Forest and we learnt lots of Welsh vocabulary for sounds such as Swn traed (Footsteps), Adar yn canu (birds singing). We used percussion instruments to recreate the Sound Collector poem and composed our own pieces of music using Black Cat compose software.
Recreating the sound collector poem using percussion instruments. We studied the Swansea born artist Ceri Richards. His work often features musical themes. We drew our own interpretations of his work. We evaluated them in English and Welsh saying what we liked and disliked about the picture. We made our own musical instruments using recycled materials and created our own musical tunes which we performed using our home made instruments. We enjoyed playing our instruments and conducting our own compositions to the class. THE FESTIVAL OF DIWALI We have studied the Hindu festival of Diwali. We re-enacted the story of Rama & Sita using props and filmed our performances. We cooked Coconut barfi's and enjoyed evaluating them. We have created our own Rangoli patterns using chalk pastels and ICT. We were really good at creating symmetrical patterns. We compared the festival of Diwali with Christmas and found that there were lots of similarities between the two festivals. These included special foods, decorations, saying prayers, lighting candles, buying presents and wearing special clothes. We created our own wax resist pictures showing the fireworks used in the Diwali celebrations.
Next we will be carrying out our theme work on 'Once upon a time'. This is a history based theme where the children will explore what life and Morriston was like during their grandparents childhood. The children will plan what they want to find out and study a range of sources to find out information. These will include interviewing grandparents, looking in books, reading diaries and recounts and looking at photographs.
Volunteers please.
We will be trying to find out as much information as possible about life during our grand parents childhood. We are looking for any grandparents who would be willing to come into school to talk to the children about what life was like when they were younger and how it is different to life today. If you are available to do this please let Miss Thomas know.

Emails to partner schools.
We have been emailing our partner schools in our Comenius project to compare life in Wales and in their countries. We have been asking about Christmas celebrations and have been making Christmas cards and presents to send to them.
Home school journals.
We are having very few comments written in the home school journals. The children and Miss Thomas spend a lot of time writing about their work each week. Please can you write a comment or sign to say you have read their comments please. Also we would be grateful if you could write in the reading record section of the journal to inform us when your child has finished a book at home. This enables us to ensure that books are changed ONLY when the children have finished reading their book at home or in school.
